Wellness Policy

 

Saint Mary’s Academy is committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects Children’s health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity. Saint Mary’s Academy supports a healthy environment in which children learn and participate in positive dietary and lifestyle practices. Improved health ensures students will have the opportunity to achieve personal, academic, developmental and social success in a positive, safe learning environment.


Nutrition Education:

Saint Mary’s Academy aims to teach, encourage and support healthy eating by students. Nutrition education will be integrated into the school curriculum through science, health, physical education, and other relevant subjects. The nutrition education program will include but not be limited to the following themes:


*Healthy snacks

*Healthy breakfast

*Healthy diet

*Food labels

*Serving size

*Dietary Guidelines

*Sources and variety of foods


Physical Activity:

Students will participate in weekly Physical Education classes. These classes will be sequential, building from year to year, and content will include movement, personal fitness, and personal and social responsibility. Students should be able to demonstrate competency through the application of knowledge, skill and practice.

All Pre-Kindergarten and elementary school students will have 30 minutes a day of supervised recess, preferably outdoors, during which moderate to vigorous physical activity will be encouraged. All junior high school students will have 15 minutes a day of supervised recess. Movement and appropriate kinesthetic activities will be integrated into classroom instructional time.


School Breakfast/Lunch Programs:

*The meal programs will follow all USDA nutrition standards for all meals served.

*Students will have access to clean drinking water during mealtimes



*All students, regardless of income level, will have access to free nutritious school meals.

*Students will not be denied meals as a form of discipline.


Competitive Foods and Beverages:

To promote healthy eating, Saint Mary’s Academy encourages all students to participate in the school meals program and prohibits the sale of competitive food products during school mealtimes.


Wellness Committee:

Saint Mary’s Academy is committed to establishing a school wide wellness committee with the purpose of:

*Developing guidance to implement this policy

*Monitoring the implementation of this policy

*Evaluating policy progress

*Revising policy as necessary

The Wellness Committee will meet a minimum of four times annually with Committee membership including, but not limited to:

*School Food Service Director

*School Nurse

*A parent representative

*A student representative

*Staff member representative

*Principal
